LUIZ SEGATTO breathes life into multiple materials through mixed medium artworks. Each piece has a personality and emotions that tell a story. His paintings process is from the outside in, starting with the frame. In addition to traditional acrylic oil paint and canvas, Luiz likes to paint on wood, and is known to incorporates metallic ink, spray paint, markers, water color, charcoal, Indian ink, tattoo ink, homemade stamps and found objects, anything that he can use to “make a mark.” Heavily influenced by Asian culture, he both signs and stamps his pieces.
For Luiz, framing is the most important part. Usually sourced from reclaimed and weathered wood, it provides the structure in which his art can live,
“I used to struggle with framing because the I would start to paint and then make the frame… and the art would sometimes get lost in the process. But now, the frames are the foundation of my art… The wood is very old, sometimes it comes from different countries, old boats, from the beach, worksites or houses that have been taken down. It’s very important that each piece of wood has a personality. The first thing I do is make a frame and then adapt the art to fit the frame. It’s a reversed process, so it makes the frame part of the installation.”
By engaging in a dialogue with his painting, Luiz allows the emotional component of the art to speak for itself,
“I let the painting guide me in order to make the art. It feels alive when I make it. I am just part of the process… I am the curator of the painting’s creative energy.”
